Sally Ann by J. P. and Annadeene Fraley. There are many Sally Ann tunes often in the key of D and they are known to be similar to Sail Away ladies. J. P. Fraley’s is unique with Annadeene’s interesting guitar backup. A native of eastern Kentucky, J. P. Fraley was taught to fiddle as a child by his father. He may have been one of the last players to have had a chance to learn something directly from Ed Haley, one of the greatest fiddlers of the region. Fraley’s recordings span thirty years, as he and his late wife Annadeene entertained festivals and audiences here and abroad, such as the American Folk Song Festival, Smithsonian Folk Festival, the National Folk Festival, Brandywine Folk Festival, Fiddler’s Grove, and many others. Annadeene, daughter of a coal miner, taught herself to play guitar and was a regular on WCMI radio in Ashland, Kentucky when she was only thirteen years old. Annadeene Fraley died in 1996, and J. P. died in 2011 in Denton, KY at 87 years old.

Sugar in the Gourd from Norman Edmonds and the Old Timers

Fiddler Norman Edmonds, (1889-1976) of Hillsville, Virginia, accompanied by the Old Timers, with Rufus Quesinberry on banjo and his sons John, Cecil and Paul Edmonds on guitars. The selections were gathered from 15 minute programs made from January to September 1958 for Galax radio. The Old Timers Show, recorded by Edmond’s son Rush, began in the mid 1950s and was on the air for fifteen minutes every Saturday morning until circa 1970. The Edmonds family generously granted Andy Cahan permission to copy the original tapes during the 1980s. Get some of the music here.
